Improving Your Emotional Intelligence

The increase of remote working has created fresh challenges for business, but it has also created opportunities. With teams spread out as opposed to being located in the same team, management and leadership is more challenging.

There is a need for leaders and managers to develop their skills, and a lot of people are looking for ways to develop their skills. As well as developing work-related skills, many people see an opportunity to enhance aspects of their personality which will assist them in the workplace.

Right now, many people are considering the importance of emotional intelligence, and they are taking steps to improve their emotional intelligence. If you are interested in this line of studies, and you are keen to enhance your skills, please contact Global Solution Services as we are happy to help.

What is emotional intelligence?

Howard Gardner, the influential Harvard theorist, describes emotional intelligence as; “Your EQ is the level of your ability to understand other people, what motivates them and how to work cooperatively with them”.

What are the benefits of emotional intelligence?

Some of the leading benefits of emotional intelligence are:

  • It creates a better working environment and enhances opportunities to work collectively

  • It makes dealing with change easier

  • It helps people to deal with tough decisions and conversations

  • It helps you engage and interact with people

Many people find leadership is closely related to emotional intelligence. Someone who is keen to lead others should show skills which are aligned with emotional intelligence.

Signs of emotional intelligence

  • You think about feelings

  • You take the time to consider things

  • You endeavour to control your thoughts

  • You can take criticism on board and benefit from it

  • You are authentic in your actions

  • You are able to demonstrate empathy

  • You can praise others

  • You offer feedback which helps others

  • You are able to apologise when you are in the wrong

  • You can forgive and forget when things go against you

  • You make commitments and you stick to them

  • You look to assist others

  • You can protect yourself from emotionally sabotaging yourself

While some people have these attributes, they are traits which can be learned and developed. Whether you have genuine career ambitions of being a leader, or you just want to improve yourself and how you engage with others, emotional intelligence is a great place to start.

While it is natural to think of an emotional intelligence training course as being suitable for leaders, it is an area that everyone can benefit from. A company looking to create a more dynamic and engaged workforce, which is capable of working as a team, should consider the importance of emotional intelligence.
