Community-driven training programmes are transforming lives across South London, giving people the chance to build new skills, boost their confidence and take important steps toward meaningful careers. In boroughs like Greenwich and Merton, these opportunities are making a tangible difference for jobseekers, school leavers and adults looking to return to work.

At Global Solution Services (GSS), we’ve seen first-hand how accessible training in local communities not only improves employability but also strengthens the wider economy. By offering tailored support and accredited training programmes, residents in Greenwich and Merton are being empowered to find sustainable work, explore new industries and unlock their potential.

Why Community Training Matters

Community training is about more than just gaining a qualification. It’s designed to be inclusive and accessible, helping people who may face barriers to employment such as redundancy, a career break or lack of confidence to re-engage with the workforce.

By holding training sessions within local venues in Greenwich and Merton, residents can learn in familiar environments close to home. This accessibility ensures that training opportunities are open to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance.

According to the Learning & Work Institute, 80% of employers believe training is essential for long-term business growth, yet many individuals still struggle to access affordable, high-quality training. Local community training bridges this gap by offering funded courses that directly respond to the needs of the labour market.

The Impact in Greenwich

Greenwich has a strong history of supporting residents through education and training. With a diverse local economy spanning retail, hospitality, health and technology, there is ongoing demand for skilled workers.

Through GSS, Greenwich residents can access:

  • Free accredited training courses in areas such as digital skills, health and social care and employability.

  • Career coaching and one-to-one guidance to build confidence and set clear goals.

  • CV and interview preparation to help secure roles in competitive industries.

For jobseekers in Greenwich, these programmes create clear pathways into employment while also improving long-term career prospects.

The Impact in Merton

In Merton, training initiatives are equally vital, particularly in supporting residents who are unemployed or looking to switch careers. By offering short-term, flexible courses, GSS helps learners quickly gain skills that are relevant to today’s job market.

Training in Merton focuses on:

  • Helping adults return to work after redundancy or a career break.

  • Supporting young people to find their first job or apprenticeship.

  • Delivering accredited qualifications that improve employability.

  • Building essential workplace skills such as teamwork, communication and resilience.

With local venues like Canons House in Mitcham, training is delivered at the heart of the community, making it both practical and impactful.

Building Skills for the Future

One of the greatest strengths of community training in Greenwich and Merton is its adaptability. Courses are regularly updated to align with the changing labour market. For example, there is growing demand for digital literacy, healthcare workers and customer service professionals.

At GSS, we also recognise the importance of emerging trends such as AI in the workplace and remote working skills, ensuring our programmes give learners the tools to thrive in modern environments.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), employment in London’s service sector continues to grow, with digital and healthcare roles expected to see the highest demand. By focusing on these industries, training in Greenwich and Merton directly supports both community needs and economic priorities.
